just today i caught a pike and the hook was deep in its gills. the pliers i had weren't long enough to safely remove the hook without getting cut on its teeth. i took my fish baton and gave it a good whack right in the head and took out the hook. i tossed it on some rocks and about 15 mins later a great crane swooped in and started to eat the pike. circle of life.

That was some good eating you let go. Fillet them right and there are no bones, and with the water so cold the meat is so good. Some beer batter and deep fried oh they are so good. Unless you pick a very polluted lake. I would catch 20lb northern pike from glacier fed lakes and they were better than trout. Trout had like a layer of fat on them and smelled terrible when cooked.

i never use a net, when a pike or muskie thats to big to handle safely, i use a fish baton, u can get them at any tackle shop. they are very effective if u use the right amount of? force and hit them right between the eyes. u can then safely remove the hook and toss the fish overboard or u can leave it on shore where a scavenger ie. racoons can eat it.

My brothers co worker is fishing in Alaska, everyone would think this is a fish story but it is true. He caught an estimated 50 lb kingsalmon when an Orca- killer whale bit the fish in half 15 feet from the boat.

Actually, orcas almost went extinct in Alaska over just such behavior. Salmon fishermen use to shoot them or blow them up with dynomite for taking their catch. It is now illegal to do so, and the orca populations are returning in great numbers. Yet, let's think honestly here, the truth is, WE are taking their fish. Not the other way around. It would be great if humans could learn to take only what we need and nothing more. Congratulations on your easy meal, Willy!

I was out kayaking off of Lopez Island last month and killer whale pods were all around me when all of a sudden a seal pup came and jumped on the back of my Kayak, eyes big as could be and he/she instantly became my BFF. I figured the whales were right on his/her tail because all I remember seeing is whales rocking my lil yak. My heart just about beat itself out of my chest.
